Who says there’s no Santa!
Two of his elves, Sandra Hollis (on the left) and Lloyd Osborne
presented Colchester SPCA President, Yvonne Higgins, with an early Christmas
present. A shed was a long awaited wish
list item & thanks to them will be put to good use. The pair are staunch supporters & members
of the SPCA, who continually find ways to support the local shelter. Sandra alone sold 175 calendars for us last
year and sold 100 calendars this year.
Lloyd saves his change & donates it to us. Sandra makes posters for
our events. The executive & staff
extend a warm thank you for all your help. (click on photo to enlarge)
The Colchester SPCA is always looking for concerned animal lovers to become members of the SPCA. Membership is very important. Besides being able to vote for changes at our local shelter, the larger the number of membership gives you more voice to lobby government for law changes. The higher numbers of members has a greater potential of being listened to when we voice needs to change or stiffen current laws concerning our animal friends. Please help by becoming a member, fill out the above membership form & forward your dues of $15 for adult or $10 for senior/student per year. Nothing is expected of you. You may become involved as much as you like, or not at all, if that is what you want. You can attend monthly Public SPCA meetings held at the community room at Atlantic Superstore. Starting Jan 2010 meetings will be the last Monday of the month at 7:30. You can join the executive board or start a committee. Or you can become a volunteer who help the staff at the shelter with cleaning or walking the dogs. We are always looking for volunteers to help at our fundraisers and those who are crafty or are good cooks - we welcome donations of items to sell at our events/canteens/yard sales & at our Christmas table held mid Nov. up to Christmas just outside Zeller’s mall door.
People who have trades such as electricians, carpenters & plumbers are always needed to maintain our shelter. If you could donate your time/services, we could pay for the parts needed or if you are able to, those could be donated also. Or maybe someone who has the time & talent could become our handyman.
We are looking for people who are animal lovers & those concerned with the welfare of animals in Colchester County to serve on our Executive Board. These are volunteer positions. We currently have openings for Vice President, and Fund Raising Chair which are empty and the President’s position is due for reappointment. We are always looking for volunteers to help at our fundraisers and those who are crafty - we welcome donations of items to sell at our events & at our Christmas table held mid Nov up to Christmas just outside Zeller’s mall door.
Donations always needed.
Cash
Gift cards from food stores are ideal
Cat food (dry and canned)
Kitten food (dry and canned)
Kitty litter - NON CLUMPLING ONLY
Cat toys
Pooper scoopers
Pet carriers
Stainless steel food bowls
Nylon Leashes
Blankets
Dog food (dry and canned)
Cleaning supplies
Paper towels & toilet paper
Office supplies
Donations needed now.
We need gravel to fix the backyard between pens and back doors.
Donations are
really low this year. The best present for the cats & dogs at the SPCA
would be some cash to pay our bills to keep us warm, fed & pay our vet
bills, while we wait for our new forever homes.

A local company has generously donated all the supplies to pour concrete in our outside runs for the dogs that will facilitate the sterilization process in the cages but we have to pay for the labor of installation, which will cost between $600-800. We are looking for donations to cover this expense.
Fundraising Ideas
There are so many ways people can help. Support our fundraising events.
Come up with your own
fundraiser, bake sales, casual dress days, etc.
For those businesses who have a box out for food donations, put another
box out for animal related items to bring to the shelter. Do a challenge between businesses. The students of Central Colchester
Junior High School have
been collecting donations for the Salvation Army for years. Then two years ago someone said, “What about
the animals”? So for the last two years,
the students have also been collecting items for the animals in the shelter
& present them at the Christmas assembly.
Other schools could do a challenge to see if they can outdo CCJHS. Items
most needed are gifts cards/cash/cheques to purchase what is needed, kitten
& cat food - dry or canned, scoopers, NON-SCOOPABLE litter,
cleaning supplies, laundry soap, office supplies, food dishes, toys and sturdy
leashes.
Save all your pennies and
Canadian Tire money and donate them to the shelter. Many children when having
their birthdays parties, have their friends give donations of animals related
items instead of presents for themselves & donate them to the shelter. The animals of the Colchester SPCA only
wishes are for a warm safe place to live, good food and someone to love
them. You can help us help them until
they find their forever home.
Remember all donations can have a tax deductible receipt given for the value of the item donated.
We received this poem, written by Darrell Hunt:
There is a special group who work hard every day,
Committed to their jobs we call SPCA.
Animals depend on them when cruel acts are done,
Defenseless pets are targeted sometimes just for fun.
These poor souls need our love, they can't speak for themselves.
As more and more animals are left up on the shelves.
Some people volunteer just because they care.
Others open pocket books, money is what they share.
If most pets were fixed we wouldn't always see
Exploded populations - Some newborns wouldn't be.
They wouldn't see the stray cats, a menace would be gone.
They could concentrate on other things gone wrong.
All animals deserve a place they can call their home,
A warm and cozy loving place where they're not alone.
They're not meant to be outside in months of constant cold,
All they want is companionship, whether young or old.
The SPCA has a heart. Their mission is well defined,
Make sure all animals will be treated and not one left behind.
Each one is very special, which they handle with such care,
So go into the SPCA and you'll find a friend there.
Thanks Darrell!
